Mount Sandel - Mesolithic Settlement in Ireland

Mount Sandel lies on a high bluff overlooking the River Bann and it is the remains of a small collection of huts provide evidence of the first people who lived in what is now Ireland. The County Derry site of Mount Sandel is named for its Iron Age fort site, believed by some to be Kill Santain or Kilsandel, famous in Irish history as the residence of the marauding Norman king John de Courcy in the 12th century AD. But the small archaeological site east of the remains of the fort is of far greater importance to the prehistory of western Europe. The Mesolithic site at Mount Sandel was excavated during the 1970s by Peter Woodman of University College Cork. Woodman found evidence of up to seven structures, at least four of which may represent rebuildings. Six of the structures are circular huts of six meters (about 19 feet) across, with a central interior hearth. The seventh structure is smaller, only three meters in diameter (about six feet), with an exterior hearth. The huts were made of bent sapling, inserted into the ground in a circle, and then covered over, probably with deer hide. Dates and Site Assemblage Radiocarbon dates at the site indicate that Mount Sandel is among the earliest human occupations in Ireland, first occupied around 7000 BC. Stone tools recovered from the site include a huge variety of microliths, which as you can tell from the word, are tiny stone flakes and tools. Tools found at the site include flint axes, needles, scalene triangle-shaped microliths, pick-like tools, backed blades, and a few hide scrapers. Although preservation at the site was not very good, one hearth included some bone fragments and hazelnuts. A series of marks on the ground are interpreted as a fish-drying rack, and other diet items may have been eel, mackerel, red deer, game birds, wild pig, shellfish, and an occasional seal. The site may have been occupied year-round, but if so, the settlement was tiny, including no more than fifteen people at a time, which is quite small for a group subsisting on hunting and gathering. By 6000 BC, Mount Sandel was abandoned to the later generations. Red Deer and the Mesolithic in Ireland Irish Mesolithic specialist Michael Kimball (University of Maine at Machias) writes: Recent research (1997) suggests that red deer may not have been present in Ireland until the Neolithic (earliest solid evidence dates to around 4000 bp). This is significant because it implies that the largest terrestrial mammal available for exploitation during Irelands Mesolithic may have been the wild pig. This is a very different resource pattern than that which characterizes most of Mesolithic Europe, including Irelands next door neighbor, Britain (which was chock full of deer, e.g., Star Carr, etc.). One other point unlike Britain and the Continent, Ireland has NO Paleolithic (at least none has yet been discovered). This means that the Early Mesolithic as seen via Mt. In both poems the person that had a beautiful heart always prevailed. These two poems and this theme basically reiterate what people have been saying for years. Through the use of fairytales and satirical ideas, Sexton demonstrates that beauty is internal not physical. Snow white is beautiful and the stepmother is also beautiful but her stepmother cannot bear someone to be more beautiful than she is â€Å"Suddenly, the mirror replied, Queen, you are full fair, ‘tis true, but Snow White is fairer than you†¦So she condemned Snow White to be hacked to death†. The mirror told her that Snow White was still the prettiest, this time she came to the dwarf house and wrapped her up and left her there, the dwarfs saved her and the mirror told again. Even after the dwarfs warned her that the queen was trying to kill her Snow White still had the heart to open the door for her stepmother, this time she put scorpion in her hair. The dwarfs saved her and warned her again but Snow White still opened the door, the last time the queen fed her a poisonous apple. But because Snow White had a beautiful heart, when the prince carried the coffin they dropped it and the apple chunk flew out of her mouth and she lived. The queen had a horrible heart and in the end she dies a horrible death and Snow White ends up with the prince. Just like in â€Å"Snow White†, In â€Å"Cinderella†, Cinderella is beautiful and has a beautiful heart but her Stepsisters, Stepmother and father treat her horribly. Sexton says â€Å"the man took another wife who had two daughters, pretty enough but with hearts like black jacks. Cinderella was their maid. † When it came time for the Royal Ball and the prince was looking for someone to marry, Cinderella was dying to go. She did everything they asked to do before going and even after completing those tasks the stepmother and stepsisters found a reason she could not go. She had nothing to wear and she couldn’t dance. Cinderella went to the tree at her mother’s grave and cried and begged for her to be able to go to the ball, she received a dress and slippers. When she arrived at the ball no one recognized her and the prince was in love with her. After dancing all night with the prince and him walking her home, she went back to her old life. Three days later the prince came looking for her, the stepmother cut off her big toe to fit into the slipper. The stepsister cut off her heel to fit into the slipper, the prince was ready to give up but then he found Cinderella, whos foot fit into the slipper, as sexton says â€Å" like a love letter, fit into its envelope. At their wedding the sister came and a dove pecked their eyes out, the prince and Cinderella lived happily ever after. In both poems two beautiful women with beautiful hearts were treated poorly for simply being beautiful. This reflects off of real life because every day there is a girl treated badly simply because she is beautiful. I believe Sexton is showing the real life aspect of these two traditional fairytales. She is also showing the idea that a beautiful face is not nearly worth as much as a beautiful heart and that the person with a beautiful heart will always prevail in the end.

The amount of homework a teacher can give to a student should be restricted, and only assigned due to necessity. Critically acclaimed author Tamim Ansary reports that since 1981, the amount of homework given to the average sixth grader has increased by more than fifty percent. Many people claim that the increase in homework dates as far back as 1957, when the Russians launched Sputnik into outer space. The new competition that resulted served as incentive for schools to try to increase the difficulty of the curriculum. With harder classes came more homework (Ansary). Many teachers defend large amounts of homework, claiming that it helps prepare students for a world that is becoming increasingly competitive. However, Dr. Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). Excessive amounts of homework can be harmful to kids both physically and mentally. A lot of homework usually means a lot of books to carry. Fifty-five percent of the Massachusetts children surveyed by researchers at Simmons College carry loads heavier than fifteen percent of their body weight, the suggested limit. Carrying large amounts of weight daily at a young age can do a lot of damage because bones are still in development. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has reported that in 1999, more than 800 kids were treated in emergency rooms for backpack-related injuries. Many of these injuries can lead to serious problems later in life including chronic shoulder, neck, and back pain (“Children”). The large amount of homework is causing kids in both high school and junior high school to be up until midnight or later. When extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, etc., are added to the picture, kids may even have to wake up early the next morning to finish their homework, leaving them with an insufficient amount of sleep. Some parents and teachers argue that it would be beneficial to a child’s academics to limit after school activities. However, cutting back on the few hours a week teenagers use for exercise could be a factor in the growing obesity rates (Igo). Homework also takes away from time that a kid could be spending with his or her family. Rather than spending time bonding and building strong family relationships, parents and children argue over homework. Time is taken away from important elements of daily life. This time is particularly precious in families with two working parents whose time with their children is limited. This time could be better spent going out to dinner as a family, or doing other activities that most families are not able to do because the kids do not have time to take a break from their homework schedule (Igo). When busy work assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. With no consequences to these actions students will almost always take the easy way out when it comes to homework (Kralovec). The use of homework is effective when used by the rule less is more. Overwhelming students with loads of homework can cause them stress and possible physical injury. Homework takes away from the small amount of time kids get to spend with their parents and siblings. A limit on their physical and social activities can also take a large toll on their lives, and could hinder their health and future relationships.
